Plan, Download, Ride: Using EuroVelo GPX Tracks on Navigation Apps
Dreaming of your next cycle journey already? Don’t let snow or winter weather stop you. With the EuroVelo Route Planner, you can explore more than 91,000 km of routes from the comfort of your home – until you find the perfect itinerary.
But where do you go from there?
1. Generate the route best fitting your needs
On the EuroVelo Route Planner, once you’ve chosen the start and end points of your journey (they must be cities or towns included in the EuroVelo database – visible on the map as small grey dots), you can choose between four itinerary options:
- RECOMMENDED – a balanced itinerary combining route quality and distance
- LEAST CLIMBS – the flattest option, even if it means a slightly longer route
- MOST DEVELOPED – prioritises high-quality routes, avoiding heavy traffic and poor surfaces where possible
- MOST DIRECT – the shortest routes, regardless of climbs or development levels
Choose wisely!
2. Choose your download option
On the right side of your screen, click on “Itinerary”. In this panel, you’ll see the total distance, cumulative elevation, and estimated number of cycling days, as well as a list of route sections and their development levels. Review these carefully to make sure the itinerary matches your needs. A description of EuroVelo route development levels is available in the bottom right corner of the map (little legend symbol), but also in the EuroVelo.com FAQ.
Then click on “Download GPX”. You can choose between two download options:
Download in daily sections This option creates a file containing multiple GPX tracks and includes information on route development levels. However, multi-track GPX files are not supported by most navigation apps, except for a few such as Komoot, OsmAnd, RideWithGPS Premium or Garmin devices.
Download as a single continuous track (recommended) This option creates one GPX track for the entire route. While it does not include development-level information, it works with most navigation apps.
3. Import the GPX track to your favourite navigation app and start packing!
Now that your itinerary is ready, it’s time to choose a navigation app for the road. You may already have your favourite one! If not, there are many options available. While it’s impossible to list them all, we’ve highlighted some of the most popular ones below. You can also see this article, and the comparison from Pro Velo, the Belgian National EuroVelo Coordination Centre, available in French or Dutch.
Services allowing for an easy and free upload of your own GPX tracks (generally on desktop) are:
- AllTrails: under “Explore”, click on “Build custom route”, then “Upload a route” and drag your track.
- Bikemap: click on “Import a route”, “Upload file” and select your track.
- Cycle.travel: click on “Map”, “Import GPX”, “Choose file” and select your track.
- Komoot: click on “New”, “Import a GPS file”, “Upload file” and select your track. Longer routes may not be processed in one go so the option “Download route (in daily sections)” may be better for Komoot.
- Naviki: click on your username, “Upload route”, “Browse” and select your track.
- OsmAnd (only on the app): in the menu, click on “Add trace”, “Import a trace” and select your track.
- OutdoorActive: on your profile, click on “Start import”, “Select file” and select your track. OutdoorActive imports only ZIP files, so you’ll have to compress your GPX file first.
- RouteYou: click on “Plan a route”, “Upload a route”, “Browse” and select your track.
- Veloplanner: click on “Planner”, “Import GPX file” and select your track.
- Wikiloc: click on “Upload trail”, “Upload file” and select your track.
- And more…
